Marta and Lewis in Switzerland

Last weekend my sister Marta decided to drop down from London for a breath of fresh Swiss air.  This time around she brought her bf Lewis along, a fine english bloke.

Saturday I decided to take no mercy, and we climbing up the Dent de Morcles, doing a 8.5hr hike with over 1500m of vertical.  Not bad for a coupla brits.  We managed to avoid  the rain most of the day, and even got to see a few steinbachs!  And of course the hills were covered in Swiss cows, as always :P

Sunday was a bit more relaxed, with a bit of time spent in the car.  We drove through the vineyards between Lausanne and Vevey, what a beautiful view!  We stopped in Villeneuve, where they were having an acrobatic paragliding competition, and saw some pretty serious stunts.  We stopped by the French border at St. Gingolphe for a coffee and some ice cream, before driving back through the vineyards.

We stopped in a cellar to try some wine, and were entertained by a tourist who got her dog attacked by one of the local dogs!  It was quite the scandal, I think it will be the talk of the town for the next few weeks...

The evening was topped off with some Pimms and a barbecue, before we hit the sack, only to wake up on Monday at 4:30am to drive to the airport.

Surprise Venice Trip

This is a story better heard in person...suffice to say, two weekends ago I was planning on doing a 3-day hiking trip through the mountains of the Valais with some friends, but a rainy Switzerland changed our minds in the train, and we kept going all the way to Venice!  The weekend was full of adventures, missed trains, yelling Italians, sleeping on the beach, and walking around the city in full hiking gear, but the stories will never be forgotten.

It all started with a train ride and some wine....Djano on the left, Sylvie on the right

A nice view of Venice from above.  And the whole weekend it was raining in Switzerland...

The lovely beach we spent the night on

Just a quick map of the city....still working out this map feature

Toscana Road Trip

After dying in the Lausanne heat for a few months, decided it was time to go on vacation .  Two german friends Kristian and Nina came down from Tubingen, and along with Maria and Andrea we took off on a roadtrip to Toscana to catch some rays and eat some great pasta.
I put the path of our trip into Google Earth, in case you're interested in following where we went (click here).

It all started Saturday morning with a long drive from Lausanne.  We took the long way, climbing up the St. Bernard Pass for a nice view of the mountains and a bit of fresh air.  After a little stop in Camogli for a Foccacia, we finally made it to Framura, a nice little mini-town on the sea near Levanto where our friend Emanuele was having a huge birthday party!  The party was madness, it started on the beach for some tanning, then moved to his apartment for drinks and food on the patio (nice work with la bouffe mamma Lubrano!), then moved on to the sea-side bar for some more cocktails and of course espresso, before it went back to the beach at 3am for some night-time swimming and cliff-jumping.  This party has to become an anual event..

Sunday was spent recuperating from Saturday.  After a few hours on the beach and some more pesto genovese , we continued the roadtrip to Lerici, where we set up our tents for a couple nights.  In town we found a great restaurant that served a pizza with amazing pesto and good wine for 10euro.

Day 3 was our visit of Cinque Terre, five little towns tightly packet in valleys along the sea and recently named a UNESCO heritage site.  We started with a boat ride to Portovenere, another little town with the obligatory castle, and then took the train to Riomaggiore, the first of the five towns.  The rest of the day was spent walking between the towns and jumping into the sea every 3-4 minutes since it was so hot outside!  At one point I lost my ticket for the hiking trails between the towns, but a made up story in italian and a charming smile from Andrea somehow got me through .

Day 4 saw more driving, as we went along the coast from Lerici to Piombino, where we took the ferry to Isola d'Elba, famous for being Napolean's old jail.  On the way we stopped by Pisa (where we met Alessandro and Daria who spent the rest of the trip with us) for a bite to eat and to see the famous leaning tower.  It's amazing how many people try to get a photo in which it seems like they're holding up the tower...too funny !

On Wednesday, Kristian, Nina and I rented ourselves some scooters to get a nice tour of the island.  Needless to say we had quite a few adventures....take a look at the video to see some nice views.  Thursday we planned to see Isola Capraia, but because of apparent "heavy seas" there were no boats, so we just lazied around on the beach did some snorkling and looked at nice fishies.  Friday was more relaxing on a different beach, but this time we brought a big watermelon with us and had quite some fun carving it up on the beach.  Unfotunately the vacation couldn't last forever, and Friday evening we set off on the long trip back to Lausanne.

I've posted some selected pictures from the trip in the photo gallery, so take a look.
